NOTEWORTHY NEWS:
July 16
- US Navy Ship fires on small boat in Persian Gulf, 1-killed
- RUSSIA: Russia plans to add 26-brigades to the army by 2020, reaching 1 million men. They also plan to reorganize the army into a lighter, more mobile and efficient force (...the new shape feels more European, or specifically French, and more airmobile ...can't wait to adjust the ORBAT) (Ria Novosti)
- OLD = 4-Tier Organization (Military District > Army > Division > Regiment)
- NEW = 3-Tier organization (Military District > Operational Command > Brigade)
- New Brigades:
- 14-Army Aviation
- 10-Recon
- 2-Air Defense
July 17
- SYRIA: Heavy fighting reported in Damascus, and it's been rumored that the Army Command has retreated to a heavily fortified complex in Damascus, and that WMD's have been deployed near various rebel centers, possibly for mass use and extermination of the enclaves.
- USS Stennis: I've been reading about how the Stennis had their training accelerated to allow deploying 4-months early, so they can relieve the Enterprise in CENTCOM. I'm confused... my ETA to deploy the Stennis was October, with Enterprise returning home possibly in September. A proper overlap would be one month, to allow time to relieve each other, so either the Stennis can accelerate by one month, or Enterprise delay by one month. Either way my ETA was already close to proper relief. I'm not sure what the excitement is, except to affect policy.
July 18
- RUSSIA: Russia decides to equip the army with mostly wheeled vehicles (self-propelled guns, air defense, light tanks), has begun domestic R&D, and is working with France and Italy to to purchase, produce and develop.
- SYRIA: Bomb kills four senior government officials (Security Chief, Defense Minister, Interior Minister, and Vice-Presidential Aid); President Assad disappears, later determined to be in Latakia.
July 19
- SYRIA: FSA fighters reportedly seize several border posts on Jordan, Iraqi and Turkish borders, while heavy fighting in sections of Damascus force thousands to flee into Lebanon
July 20
- UK: The first F-35B STOVL fighter was delivered to the UK, and will see duty in the UK in 2018 as well as on their new carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth
